Emirates Stadium side interested in tough tackling Stamford Bridge star.
Italian source CalcioMercato claims that Arsenal are interested in signing Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien.
The 30 year old was on loan at Real Madrid before that deal was terminated so that the Ghana international could be treated by Chelsea’s medical team due to the lengthy time it has taken for the defensive midfielder to recover from an injury but he is reportedly likely to be fit by January.
The tough tackling midfielder certainly looks surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge and Arsene Wenger could well do with a strong presence in the centre of his midfield, with the Frenchman having to currently rely on stylish Spaniard Mikel Arteta performing in a holding role that perhaps doesn’t get the most out of the former Everton man.
Essien is a proven Premier League performer who has only been forced out of Chelsea’s first team due to the abundance of young talent vying for a spot in the Blues midfield and he could well be a cost effective option for Wenger to consider when the transfer window re-opens next month.
Any interest Arsenal have would probably be increased if Essien is indeed considered not fit enough to join his national team colleagues at the 2013 African Nations Cup in January but also would depend on just how far from a return from the sidelines the former Lyon man was.
Essien has made almost 250 appearances for Chelsea and helped the West London side to two Premier League titles.
