And he sounded them out over the possibility of landing the Spaniard next summer.
Silva was stunned to learn of their interest and is open to the prospect of a Bernabeu switch at the end of the season.
But, following discussions, Madrid bosses fear his wage expectations could kill off their chances of landing him.
Silva signed a new deal at City worth a staggering £200,000-a-week in September.
A Real source said: “It is a very difficult operation, but not impossible.”

Given that Man City have failed for the second successive season to make a dent into their pursuit of the Champions League there is perhaps a chance that stylish midfielder David Silva could be lured away from La Liga giants Real Madrid, though clearly the Etihad Stadium side would fight tooth and nail to prevent the former Valencia man from pursuing a move back to his native Spain.
Silva has had an up and down campaign thus far this term but is still a crucial member of Roberto Mancini’s first team set-up and over the past two and a half seasons the 26 year old has been a key provider of ammunition for the club’s strike-force whilst also weighing in with goals of his own.
In his first season Silva racked up nine Premier League assists and last season he headed the Premier League by providing 15 assists to help Mancini’s side clinch the title.
One does wonder quite where Silva would fit into Real Madrid’s first team but clearly if club president Florentino Perez and Jose Mourinho are pursuing the cultured attacking midfielder then clearly the Bernabeu side are very keen on acquiring his services.
