Shakhtar Donestk star teases Old Trafford and Etihad Stadium supporters.
Shakhtar Donetsk star Fernandinho says he is going to sign for either Manchester United or Manchester City next month – but he is keeping schtum as to who that will be.
The exciting attacker has been central to Shakhtar’s impressive Champions League campaign so far this season.
He scored in the 2-1 win over Chelsea last month and has been tracked by numerous clubs with a view to a move.
Intriguingly, the 27-year-old Brazil international says he is leaving Shakhtar and moving to Manchester in January, but he has not said which club he will be joining.
“I am closing a deal with an English club. I will play in Manchester in January,” he told Calciomercato.
So who is it?
Interesting that Fernandinho would choose to reveal this news a couple of days before the Manchester derby. So is the 27 year old getting away with himself or is he aware of something we are not?
Of the two sides in question it would appear that Man United in more need of a rangy tough tackling midfielder and he may well be the type of addition that could help the onward opposition advances that have contributed to the club’s very leaky defence.
Man City sold Nigel de Jong in the summer as the Dutchman wasn’t guaranteed a first team spot so it would be odd then for Roberto Mancini to target a player of a similar style.
The 27 year old is into his eighth season in Ukraine and may feel he has achieved as much as is possible with Shakhtar, having won the domestic title on five occasions. It would however be surprising if Fernandinho would choose to leave in January given that a) he has just helped his side into the last 16 of the Champions League and b) is not cup tied for said competition, though clearly that is less relevant for Man City as it is for Man United.
