Anfield side keen on bringing Spanish international back to Merseyside.

XABI ALONSO has cast doubt over his future at Real Madrid, prompting suggestions he could leave the club in January.
The Spain international has not negotiated a new contract at the Bernebeu, which could spell the end for him in Spain.

Liverpool are believed to be keen on re-signing him and Alonso is understood to favour a move back to the Reds.

Whilst there is no doubting that Spanish international Xabi Alonso has a lot of time and respect for his former employers is there really any chance the Real Madrid man would be heading back to Anfield any time soon?

Clearly the midfield maestro would be warmly welcomed back by the club’s supporters but it seems highly unlikely that the 31 year old would be moving back to Liverpool, especially as the Merseyside club seems some way off the Champions League qualification race and unlikely to challenge for major honours in the near term.

Alonso spent five seasons at Liverpool prior to a £30m move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2009 and the former Real Sociedad man has gone from strength to strength at the Bernabeu, culminating in a La Liga title triumph last term.

Brendan Rodgers could well be keen on bringing more strength and direction to a midfield that hasn’t really gelled this season. Steven Gerrard is clearly advancing in years and has become less of an attacking option. Joe Allen has shown glimpses of the form that led to his move to Liverpool. Jordan Henderson has proved to be something of a financial disaster and therefore the club would dearly love to see Alonso make an emotional return.

Xabi Alonso made 210 appearances for Liverpool notching up 18 goals, some of them real stunners, and in the process winning the Champions League in his first term at the club.
