Fergie riles Mancini as United boss swoops to pinch City’s £20m transfer targets
Sir Alex Ferguson is plotting a January transfer raid for at least two of Manchester City’s top targets in a move sure to infuriate Roberto Mancini ahead of Sunday’s derby.
Sportsmail can reveal that Manchester United chief executive David Gill flew to Croatia on Tuesday for talks about signing Dinamo Zagreb’s £15million-rated teenage sensation Alen Halilovic.
Mindful of Ferguson’s need for more defensive cover, Gill also enquired about 20-year-old right back Sime Vrsaljko and could now follow up with an audacious £20m double deal for two of Croatia’s hottest prospects.

Sir Alex Ferguson has developed a taste for youthful signings in recent seasons and appears to be closing in on a couple of very talented starlets at the expense of local rivals Man City.
16 year old Halilovic has been dubbed ‘the Croatian Messi’ and though the midfielder is clearly a player who is well thought of he has only just started to make his first senior club appearances so it may be a little too early to be doling out the superlatives and unrealistic comparisons.
Man City were reportedly close to completing a deal to snap up the Dinamo Zagreb teenager but Roberto Mancini had failed with an opening offer and may have been beaten to the punch by United.
Halilovic has already made his Champions League bow and has performed well at Under 17 international level for Croatia.
Right-back Sime Vrsaljko is the more experienced of the pair with the 20 year old already into his third season at Dinamo Zagreb and has been capped at full international level and shown a great deal of promise that has led to interest from Arsenal, among others.
Ferguson may feel that he could do with strengthening his defence and Vrsaljko can also play at left-back and that adaptability could be vital given the shocking displays the table toppers have put in at the back this season.
Brazilian Rafael has however been impressive for much of the campaign but was hauled off after just half an hour against Reading last weekend.
