The Magpies are looking in another direction after being frustrated by top target Mathieu Debuchy.
After successive negotiations broke down with Lille over a deal for French International Debuchy, Pardew has turned his attention to Atletico Mineiro attacking right-back Marcos Rocha.
Brazilian media sources claim the Daily Mail first reported Newcastle’s interest in the recently-crowned Best Brazilian Right-Back of 2012. Newcastle have even gone as far as to make an official enquiry about the 24-year old’s availability.
Alan Pardew is looking to bring in a right-back as one of the pieces for a deeper squad in the new year. As Newcastle have qualified for the Europa League, the former Southampton boss wants to have a more experienced, deeper side to stay competitive on both domestically and in Europe.
Atletico Mineiro are unlikely to part company with the player during the January window, however, since they have qualified for the Copa Libertadores for the first time in 13 years. Chairman Alexandre Kalil was categorical in denying any player exits, including Rocha and fellow coveted young star Bernard.
Newcastle, however may still may keep faith in signing the lightning-quick full-back in the future, as he demonstrated excitement at playing in the Premier League and did not rule out a move abroad in next year’s summer window.
