Italian coach in Abramovich’s shortlist for new Chelsea manager after Benitez.
Luciano Spalletti’s journey as coach of Zenit St Petersburg appears to be coming to an end. According to talkSPORT, the Italian manager is not happy in the Russian club, and would be looking for a return to western Europe, aiming primarily for a job at a Premier League club.
The row with Brazilian striker Hulk after a recent Champions League game with AC Milan, was the straw that broke the camel’s back for former Roma coach, who has finally decided to leave the Russian team, which has failed to qualify for the next stage of the European competition.
Rafa Benitez, who replaced Roberto Di Matteo last month, is only at Stamford Bridge in an interim capacity and there are huge doubts over whether Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich will extend his contract at the end of the season.
Former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola, who is currently on a year-long sabbatical, is club’s number one choice but it remains to be seen whether he will take the Stamford Bridge job.
The Italian manager, who took over at Zenit in 2009, has won two league titles, a national cup and a Super cup in Russia.
