Wenger Spree

Emirates Stadium side set sights on defensive midfield presence to help fill Gunners ‘soft centre’.

Arsenal are interesting in signing Mohamed Diame from West Ham in January, Goal.com can reveal.

Arsene Wenger has abandoned his faith in Abou Diaby and is ready to move for a midfield anchorman in the forthcoming window.

The Arsenal manager has been alerted to the potential availability of the Senegal international, who, as West Ham chairman David Gold admitted on Friday, has a release clause in his contract that can be triggered in January.

Sources have told Goal.com that the clause is “close to £4 million”, a sum that Wenger regards as good value.

Arsene Wenger would do well to ‘abandon’ this faith in Abou Diaby as for pretty much his entire Arsenal career the French midfielder has either been woefully ineffective or sidelined with an injury. The 26 year old actually started the current campaign brightly but after a few games was once again ruled out with a knock and now may be the time to look for a more able defensive midfield presence.

Mohamed Diame has done very well since his summer move to West Ham and for whatever reason Sam Allardyce was happy to hand the former Wigan Athletic man a contract that included a fairly cheap release clause that leaves the Hammers open to offers that will surely come in the January transfer window.

The box to box performer was outstanding when he came on as a half-time sub against Chelsea last weekend and has been a consistent presence in the West Ham midfield all season.

West Ham saw Demba Ba leave in similar circumstances a couple of years ago and could well struggle to keep hold of Diame if Arsenal come calling.

Arsene Wenger’s side certainly have a ‘soft centre’ and the Gunners boss decision to use Mikel Arteta in a holding role is greatly curbing the Spaniard’s creativity and any move to land a more viable ‘enforcer’ signing would have to be a wise one, especially at a price that will suit a financially prudent side like Arsenal.
