Stamford Bridge side ready to make mammoth offer for in-form striker.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is reportedly ready to launch a £60m bid to sign in-form striker Radamel Falcao. The Stamford Bridge side have been strongly linked with interest in the 26 year old Atletico Madrid man and are keen to win the race to snap up the Colombian amid speculation that La Liga giants Real Madrid could be set to make an offer for the former FC Porto forward.

Falcao scored five goals for his Vicente Calderon side against Deportivo La Coruna and as a result further impressed watching Chelsea scouts who have been monitoring the marksman for the best part of three months. Indeed the West London side first became genuinely interested in the striker after he struck a hat-trick against Chelsea in the Super Cup Final in Monaco in late August.

Having seen Chelsea crash out of the Champions League and struggle for form in the Premier League in recent weeks Abramovich is keen to strengthen his squad and feels that a big money acquisition could also help appease a fan-base that didn’t take the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo well, not to mention their dissatisfaction at getting Rafa Benitez as a replacement, even on an interim basis.

Though Atletico Madrid are riding high in second spot in La Liga there is every chance that a big money offer could be accepted by president Enrique Cerezo, after all Los Che are well known for cashing in on talent with the likes of Fernando Torres, Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero all making big money exits in the recent past.

An offer of €75m (£60m) may be too tempting for Atletico Madrid to turn down and any sign that the Spanish club are even considering such a sale could well lead Falcao to them pursue an exit, citing the club’s lack of ambition if need be.

Falcao netted 36 goals in his first season in Spain, proving that he could replicate his efforts in Portugal and this season has proven even more successful for the powerful goal-getter.

The Santa Marta born forward has scored an astonishing 19 goals in 15 appearances this season and this has made him Chelsea’s number one transfer target. Abramovich will hope to snap up the forward in January and will then give Fernando Torres the rest of the season to prove himself worthy of a spot in the Blues squad and if he continues to suffer repeated goalless runs then the Premier League side will look to cut their losses on the £50m signing.
