Stamford Bridge side line up bid for St James’ Park midfielder.
CHELSEA are eyeing up a move for Newcastle midfielder Cheick Tiote in January.
Chelsea, who are currently competing in the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan, were dealt an untimely blow with the news that Oriol Romeu will miss the rest of the season after undergoing knee surgery.
This source goes on to state that the need for a new Chelsea ‘enforcer’ is accentuated by the fact that John Obi Mikel will be on African Nations Cup duty in January and February, whilst clearly this is also an issue that will affect Ivory Coast international Cheick Tiote in much the same way.
Nonetheless Tiote has been strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge before and the former FC Twente man could well be considering his future as the current season hasn’t quite gone according to plan for a Magpies side struggling to retain the form that helped seal a top five spot last term.
The 26 year old has been a consistent performer since his £3.5m move from Holland to the English top tier and if Chelsea made an offer significantly higher than that paid by owner Mike Ashley then there is always a chance that the Newcastle United owner would consider cashing in on the tough tackler.
Alan Pardew faces a fight to keep some of his top talent, Demba Ba has a release clause hanging over this head and the likes of Papiss Cisse and Yohan Cabaye could also be tempted away from St James’ Park after a none to convincing start to the season has left the North-East side sitting 14th spot in the table, just two points from the relegation zone.
