Old Trafford side to launch bid for long term target.
Man United are reportedly ready to re-ignite his interest in long term target Steven Defour. Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson is known to be an admirer of the talented midfielder, most notably during his time at Standard Liege, and now the Scot is set to make an offer for the FC Porto battler.
24 year old Defour was strongly linked with a move to Man United back in 2009 before a lengthy injury put paid to a switch to the Premier League side. Ferguson even sent a letter to the Mechelen born man wishing him a speedy recovery and following his recovery the Belgian international left for Portugal where he has become a pivotal player at the Estadio Dragao, where he won a domestic title in his first season at the club.
Ferguson is keen to freshen up his midfield and is looking to bring in a player who can help solidify an area of his squad that has been a little brittle this term. Far too often Man United have been overrun by the opposition and the Man United manager hopes that a determined customer like Defour can help stem the tide.
Defour is also a forward thinking force, able to push on and connect midfield and attack whilst being something of a goal-threat himself.
Man United are willing to offer €20m (£16m) for Defour and are aware that such a move may prove more likely to succeed next summer as Porto are still in the Champions League and unbeaten in domestic league action, though tied with arch rivals Benfica.
