It is believed that the 27-year-old Serbian international became involved in a heated exchange with a supporter carrying an Albania flag as he warmed up on the sideline during the game, prior to coming on as an early sub for injured team-mate Samir Nasri.
There is a history of tension between Serbia and Albania, particularly over the disputed Kosovo region. Kolarov will apparently speak with police over the matter next week.
Kolarov was himself subbed after picking up a knock towards the end of Man City’s win over Newcastle United.
