Huub Stevens has been sacked as coach of Schalke following their 3-1 defeat to Freiburg on Saturday.
Schalke’s loss versus Freiburg leaves the club outside the top six of the Bundesliga going into the winter break, with youth team coach Jens Keller placed in charge for Tuesday’s DFB-Pokal tie with Mainz.
This seems an odd decision.
Schalke have struggled for form in the Bundsesliga but sit in a seventh spot, hardly a disaster. Perhaps even more bizarrely the sacking comes after the Gelsenkirchen finished top of their Champions League group having finished the stage unbeaten and safely through to the last 16 of the competition.
Perhaps most worryingly though the decision could leave much sought after talents like Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Lewis Holtby and Julian Draxler with the excuse they need to push for a Schalke exit.
