Stamford Bridge side continue to track Colombian.
CHELSEA are thrashing out a deal to bring Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao to London as a £50m Christmas present for Fernando Torres.
Interim manager Rafa Benitez believes he has got his troubled hitman back as a potent scoring force again and now wants to reward him with a strike partner.
Falcao, 26, will cost £50m – the same price Chelsea paid for Spanish forward Torres from Liverpool almost two years ago.
Boss Benitez hinted yesterday that the time was right for the pressure to be taken off Torres, who he believes is fast becoming the player he once managed at Liverpool.
He said: “It’s not all there yet but it’s close. We’ve worked on little things, told him not to go deep because we have Juan Mata and Oscar working in those areas. He looks happy again.
“Fernando is ready to fight for his position. He knows that we know he needs help and the problem in January is who to get.
“I am not involved in buying players but I have trust in the people at the club who are.”
Chelsea officials have already been to Madrid to open negotiations with Atletico, who would prefer to sell Falcao to Chelsea rather than see him end up playing for their fierce rivals Real Madrid.

Chelsea have been tracking Radamel Falcao for some months and anyone who felt that an 8-0 win over Aston Villa would calm speculation about the Blues need to bring in extra firepower may be disappointed.
Whilst clearly Rafa Benitez has begun to see his Stamford Bridge charges up their game in recent weeks the Spaniard will not say no to the possibility of bringing in a world class striker like Falcao. The Atletico Madrid goal machine has been scoring at an alarming rate and if the Colombian can be lured away from the Vicente Calderon then Roman Abramovich is ready to fork out the funds needed to see a deal get done.
Previously talk of a move for Falcao had very much been seen as a way to replace Fernando Torres but the good run of form displayed by the Chelsea forward has seemingly led to talk of the former Liverpool man needing ‘support’ up front rather than a sign that the West London side were to cut their losses and sell the forward.
Torres has scored seven goals in his last six appearances and though some could point out that the level of opposition in this period has been fairly poor such claims would be slightly churlish as clearly the 28 year old can only net against those defences placed in front of him.
Atletico Madrid are known for cashing in on their big name performers; Fernando Torres, Diego Forlan, Sergio Aguero and David de Gea, and despite the fact that Diego Simeone’s side are sitting comfortably in second spot in La Liga the club may find it hard to resist huge offers for Falcao.
Radamel Falcao has scored 20 goals in 16 matches this season and managed a very impressive 36 in his debut season last term, which helped Atletico to a Europa League triumph.
