Stamford Bridge side push on with attempts to lure Bayer Leverkusen man to West London.
Chelsea’s interim manager Rafael Benítez said that Fernando Torres has told him he would welcome competition for his place — with the club also including Demba Ba as one of the strikers on their list of possible targets as well as Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain.
Ideally Chelsea would like to finally persuade Bayer Leverkusen to sell the German international Andre Schurrle — although he is not a central striker — after having bids of £15.5m and close to £20m rejected last summer. Leverkusen continue to insist they will not sell in January.
Andre Schurrle may well be Chelsea’s ideal January transfer target but the Blues will have to fork out a big sum to convince Bayer Leverkusen to sell their prized asset.
The 22 year old has been in fine form this term, this coming after a less than spectacular first season at the BayArena, and the German international may well jump at the chance of a move to the big spending Premier League side, even though his own side are sitting in second spot in the Bundesliga.
Even though Chelsea are on a solid run of form at present, with goals coming freely, Rafa Benitez knows he needs further attacking options to help boost a strike-force that depends heavily on Fernando Torres and has to rely to a large degree on his midfield and wide attackers to provide an end product as well as providing the ammunition for the in-form Spaniard.
Schurrle has been excellent this term and if Chelsea were willing to bid close to £20m in the summer then they may now be ready to up their last offer in the hope of luring the adaptable attacker to Stamford Bridge as the Blues look to re-ignite their Premier League title challenge.
