Old Trafford side target Borussia Dortmund battler.
Man United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is scouting German international Ilkay Gundogan ahead of a summer bid for the 22 year old midfielder.
The Borussia Dortmund youngster came to Ferguson’s attention after scouts monitoring striker Robert Lewandowski were impressed by the assured displays put in by the former Nuremberg battler.
Ferguson is keen to freshen up his midfield with the likes of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs edging towards the completion of their hugely successful careers. The Scot wants to bring in a strong tackler to help prevent opposition advances that have been something of an issue this term.
Man United have struggled defensively but this is down in no small part to the fact that the club lacks a steely presence and box to box performer Gundogan is now high up on Ferguson’s priority list for next summer, having stated publicly that he would not be signing players in the January transfer window.
Sir Alex Ferguson has targeted a number of defensively minded midfielders with the likes of PSV’s Kevin Strootman and Celtic youngster Victor Wanyama also on the Man United radar.
Having successfully brought in Shinji Kagawa from Borussia Dortmund in the summer and with moves to bring in striker Lewandowski, Ferguson will hope that he can also lure Gundogan into an Old Trafford move at the end of the current campaign, a move that could be more fruitful if Jurgen Klopp’s side fail to prevent the Bundesliga title being wrestled from their grasp by a resurgent Bayern Munich side.
Gundogan is into his second season at the Westfalenstadion and has four national team caps to his name.
