Old Trafford side target Athletic Bilbao marksman.
Sunday Mirror Sport understands the Premier League leaders will be in the hunt for Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente when he becomes a free agent in the summer.
But Llorente has fallen out of favour as his contract ticks into its final few months.
And Ferguson believes it will be an astute piece of business if he lands the powerful target-man for free in the summer.

One would have to wonder why Sir Alex Ferguson would need added firepower given the number of times they are currently hitting the back of the net but given that Fernando Llorente would be available on a free transfer perhaps such a move would be a cost effective one to consider.
Llorente has almost certainly outgrown Athletic Bilbao and probably should have looked to leave San Mames in the summer, especially after team-mate Javi Martinez left for Bayern Munich, and the 6ft 6in forward is now treading water waiting for the season to come to an end.
Boss Marcelo Bielsa has left the consistent forward out of his first team a fair bit this season, seemingly as punishment for not agreeing a new deal, leaving the talented Spanish international free to leave the club out of pocket as he completes a free transfer move in the summer.
Llorente scored 29 goals in all competitions last term and was the leading Spanish scorer in La Liga last term and is said to have impressed when he went up against Man United in Europa League action last term with the Basque side knocking out the Premier League side with relative ease.
Ferguson’s side have notched up 50 Premier League goals this season, with Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney offering good goal-scoring support to hot-shot Robin Van Persie.
One would imagine that any interest in Llorente would be down to the possible sale of one of those in Man United’s armoury, perhaps Mexican Chicharito being most likely to leave having failed to secure a regular spot in the starting eleven.
