The Hammers make enquiry to bring back former midfield star
The battle for Joe Cole’s signature is heating up with Sky Sports claiming that West Ham have made an official enquiry for the player. The former England star continues to find a first team birth at Anfield elusive and it appears both club and player are ready to cut their losses.
West Ham face competition for the tricky midfielder with the player’s former manager at West Ham, the recently-appointed QPR boss Harry Redknapp, having confirmed his intention to make a bid during the current transfer window. Reading are also rumoured to be interested in bringing the player to the Madejski Stadium but Cole could be tempted by a return to his boyhood club.
One sticking point could be the player’s wages. Liverpool continued to pay some of Cole’s reported £90,000 a week salary during his loan spell at Lille but are now keen to get the player off their wage bill. With none of the clubs reportedly interested in Cole able to match such a deal, the player is reported to have asked Liverpool for a pay off of £3.6 million to terminate the remaining 18 months on his contract.
