Emirates Stadium side set sights on young box to box midfielder.
Arsenal are readying a move for highly rated PSV Eindhoven midfielder Kevin Strootman.
Arsene Wenger has earmarked a move for the young Dutch international as he looks to add more steel to his Gunners squad and will offer Russian winger Andrei Arshavin as part of an offer that the Arsenal boss hopes will tempt the Eredivisie side into selling the box to box performer.
The rangy 22 year old midfielder Strootman is a player Wenger hopes can provide protection for his more creative talents whilst also providing an obstacle to opposition advances. The former Utrecht man has been linked with a move away from PSV Eindhoven pretty much from the moment he arrived at the Phillips Stadion.
Strootman has been mighty impressive over the past 18 months, displaying the kind of form that has attracted a host of scouts to watch his every move and helping PSV to the top of the Eredivisie table.
PSV boss Dick Advocaat has reportedly expressed his interest in bringing in Arsenal wide-man Arshavin and this has led to Wenger’s willingness to use the 31 year old attacker as a makeweight in his advances for Strootman.
Advocaat knows Arsavhin well from his two year spell as Russian national team boss and may well feel that the former Zenit man can re-ignite his career at the Philips Stadion.
Arshavin has been something of a disappointment at the Emirates Stadium, failing to replicate the form that led to his emergence as one of Europe’s most talented players following an outstanding Euro 2008 finals tournament.
Strootman may well be ready to make the inevitable move from the Dutch top tier to one of Europe’s ‘Big’ leagues and a move to Arsenal could be one that the powerful midfielder is ready to make.
