Villa reportedly making a move for England and Man City defender
Aston Villa have been reported to be sizing up a bid for Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott, according to the Daily Mirror.
The Midlands club are currently a point off the relegation zone, and are looking to plug a leaky back-line having conceded fifteen goals in three games over the Christmas period. Villa currently have the worst goal difference in the Premier League, with -24. An experienced defender is now a top priority for Paul Lambert’s young side. Lescott meanwhile has fallen out of favour at Manchester City, and could been tempted by a regular starting position at his boyhood club.
The 30-year old has a significantly high wage bill, which will need to be reduced were he to negotiate with Villa. Lescott has also attracted interest from former club Everton and Sunderland.
Aston Villa owner Randy Lerner has been pleased with Lambert’s efforts to reduce the wage bill, which has seen a number of young players graduating into the first team. Any move for Lescott could see the England international made captain.
Villa are looking forward to a league cup semi-final next Tuesday against Bradford, which will ease the pressure away from their poor League form. Christian Benteke has been this seasons outstanding revelation, with nine goals to his name so far.
