Wigan midfielder the subject of £8million Arsenal interest.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will continue with his transfer policy of snapping up the best young talent by tabling an £8million offer for Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy, the Sunday Mirror report.
The 22-year-old’s performances at the heart of Wigan’s midfield are said to have impressed Wenger and he will attempt to beat off competition from Merseyside rivals Liverpool and Everton to capture the Republic of Ireland international.
McCarthy was signed by Wigan for £1.2million from Hamilton Academicals in 2009, having made his debut as a 15-year-old for the Scottish side, and only put pen to paper on a new five year deal at the start of last season.
He has already amassed more than 200 appearances in his career for both Hamilton and Wigan, as well as gaining nine caps for the Republic of Ireland, and Wenger sees McCarthy as an experienced Premier League performing and the perfect player to fit into Arsenal’s system. He can play a holding midfield role or push forward, giving Wenger the kind of utility man he craves.
Wenger is also tracking Barcelona forward David Villa, who is set to leave the Nou Camp in the transfer window, and has opened discussions of the signature of Atletico Madrid striker Adrian Lopez. Montpellier defender Mapou Yanga-Mbwia is also a target with a £3.5million move in the offing.
