Emirates Stadium side given fresh hope in push to sign Spanish international.
Arsene Wenger has spoken to Barcelona striker David Villa to convince him he should move to Arsenal, writes the Sunday People.
The Gunners are one of five clubs to have inquired about his availability but manager Wenger has opted for the personal touch to improve his chances of landing the 31-year-old Spain attacker.
Villa, who has scored 53 goals in 85 matches for Spain, is now hugely tempted by the possibility of a January move to the Emirates.
And while Barca are happy for discussions to take place, they have made it clear to both the player and Arsenal that they do not want to sell him until the summer.
Wenger is understood to have contacted Villa, with Barcelona’s permission, to explain his plans for the future. A deal this month would be worth £16million to the Catalan club – but that would drop to around £12m by the summer. Ideally Wenger wants him on board now but he is willing to wait until the summer if it is the only option.

If Barcelona have indeed given the ‘all-clear’ for Arsenal to conduct personal talks with striker David Villa one would have to imagine that the Nou Camp side are happy to sell the Spanish international and given that the former Valencia man is seemingly ready to quit the Catalan giants a move to the Emirates Stadium certainly looks a strong possibility.
Tito Vilanova has used the 31 year old sparingly and this may well lead David Villa to believe he is surplus to requirements at Barcelona and the challenge of a move to the Premier League could help re-ignite a career that has stagnated over the past 18 months.
Arsene Wenger certainly appears keen on the Barcelona forward and he could certainly do with some added firepower having relied upon Olivier Giroud for much of the current campaign, with Theo Walcott being handed a striking role with promising results in recent weeks.
Villa has netted 40 goals in 91 appearances for the Barcelona but though this is by no means a decent effort the Spaniard was scoring far more regularly during his spell at the Mestalla.
Vilanova is known to be a manager who trusts to youth and appears more open to using the likes of Pedro, Alexis Sanchez and Cristian Tello as support to Lionel Messi and it seems likely that in time David Villa’s first team action will only reduce and therefore this month may be the right time for the striker from Asturias to leave the Spanish top tier.
