Stamford Bridge and Etihad Stadium sides keen on Bernabeu defender.
Real Madrid star on his way to Chelsea or Man City?
Real Madrid are hoping to offload former Chelsea and Manchester City target Fabio Coentrao this month.
Chelsea and City both approached Benfica regarding Coentrao back in 2011 but Madrid stole in and landed the left-back for around £27m.
However, his time at Real has been mixed and after reporting late to training on New Year’s Day, the club are looking to sell.
And news of Coentrao’s availability could lead to renewed interest from west London, with Madrid ready to cash-in on the 24-year-old Portugal international.
Of the two sides one would imagine Chelsea’s need for a new left sided defensive option was greater. With Ashley Cole likely to leave the club in the summer Fabio Coentrao could be a ready made replacement for the England veteran and could well be interested in a move to West London having seemingly fell out with Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho.
Roberto Mancini is of course not a man that needs much encouragement to spend money for the sake of it but with Gael Clichy doing a good consistent job and with Aleksandr Kolarov as a very handy understudy it may not be all that crucial for the Etihad Stadium side to register their interest in the 24 year old.
Coentrao was brought in to challenge Marcelo for the left-back slot but injuries permitting Mourinho still rates the Brazilian more highly. The former Benfica man has made just six La Liga appearances this season and if Real Madrid do opt to sell the Portuguese international they will struggle to recoup anywhere near the £27m they spent on his services 18 months ago.
