Real Madrid midfielder could return to the Premier League.
Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United are all monitoring Luka Modric’s future closely after the midfielder was criticised following the first half of his debut season with Real Madrid, several British newspapers report.
Modric made a £33million switch from Tottenham Hotspur to the Bernabeu in the summer, opting for Spain ahead of moves to Stamford Bridge or the two Manchester clubs.
But, after scoring only once and creating just three more goals in his 22 appearances – only eight of which have been starts in La Liga – for Real Madrid this season, Modric has come under fire and branded the worst signing of 2012 in La Liga by sports newspaper Marca.
And the Premier League’s big three are monitoring the situation closely with 27-year-old Modric having been unable to settle in the Spanish capital, where he has been unable to prevent Real Madrid having an underwhelming start to the season.
Chelsea are known admirers having almost signed the Croatian international playmaker at the start of the 2011/12 season when then Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp forced Modric to train alone after having his head turned.
That Chelsea bid failed, but owner Roman Abramovic was ready to splash the cash this summer only to be beaten to Modric’s signature by Real Madrid. Sir Alex Ferguson is a big fan too, having considered bidding for Modric before the start of the season as a replacement for the ageing Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs. Any deals are likely to be done in the summer, however, and not in the January transfer window.
