St James’ Park new arrivals targeted immediately.
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is to urgently step up his search for new additions to his under-performing squad following Saturday’s 2-0 FA Cup defeat at Brighton – and wants a new face on board within a week.
A miserable run of results continued as a weakened Newcastle were dumped out of the FA Cup and Pardew now faces a race against time to improve his squad before visiting Norwich in a Premier League relegation scrap next Saturday.
French international right-back Mathieu Debuchy has already been signed, but a striker is Pardew’s priority following the departure of Demba Ba to Chelsea on Friday. He could also be in the hunt for a centre-back with Fabricio Coloccini being linked with a return to Argentina.
Loic Remy, the Marseille striker, is the most likely immediate signing with a £10million mooted although QPR are also in the hunt for him, while West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie has also been linked with a move north.
Pardew’s defensive search is headed by FC Twente’s Douglas, who was targeted in the summer only for the transfer fee to put off Newcastle. Inter Milan are also in the hunt for the Brazilian, according to the Journal.
Speaking after the Brighton defeat, Pardew said: “It’s important to spend during this month. I’d like to see another player come in through the door to join Mathieu Debuchy in the next week or so. It’s difficult to get transfers in this window but we’ll have to do everything possible. We know we need to get some bigger players who can handle the situation of carrying a Newcastle jersey.”
