Emirates Stadium side plot hugely ambitious Bernabeu swoop.
Arsenal are among the clubs tracking Real Madrid’s unwanted captain Iker Casillas, fanatix has learnt.
Iconic skipper was again left on the bench for Real Madrid’s thrilling 4-3 victory over Real Sociedad and boss Jose Mourinho has hinted that he is unhappy with the 31-year-old.
“Confidence is an important element but so is competition (for your place). To be in the comfort zone for too long is not good, that goes for any player,” Mourinho said of Casillas.
As revealed by fanatix last month, the Gunners are among a number of top clubs keeping tabs on the Spain international captain and could move for the World Cup and double European Championship winner this month.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is known to be eyeing a new goalkeeper in January, after losing faith with current number one Wojciech Szczesny.
This would indeed be something of a major coup but perhaps one that isn’t totally unrealistic.
Jose Mourinho appears to have fallen out with Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas, dropping him for the club’s last fixture of 2012 which Los Blancos lost 3-2 at Malaga. The Spanish international was then dropped for the club’s opening match of 2013, only to be drafted in after replacement Antonio Adan had been sent off after six minutes.
Casillas had missed just one La Liga game in five seasons prior to the current campaign so to be dropped by Mourinho was something of a surprise to say the least.
This has sparked speculation that the World Cup winner may be considering his options, though the idea of Casillas leaving Bernabeu seems almost unthinkable given the service he has given the Spanish giants.
Arsenal keeper Szczesny put in a series of excellent displays last term but has not looked as assured this term and the Pole had to fight to regain his starting spot at the Emirates Stadium after Italian Vito Mannone replaced him during a spell out injured.
Casillas is into his 14th season in the Real Madrid first team and has racked up almost 650 appearances for the club, so it’s easy to forget that the custodian is just 31 year old, which in goalkeeping terms is still relatively young.
