Nicolas Isimat-Mirin wanted at Anfield and St James’ Park.
Liverpool and Newcastle United are embroiled in a £5million battle to sign defender Nicolas Isimat-Mirin from French league side Valenciennes.
Struggling Newcastle are desperate to add a centre-back to their squad during the transfer window after leaking goals during the festive programme and slumping into the Premier League relegation battle.
With uncertainty over the future of captain Fabricio Coloccini, who has been linked with a return to Argentina, and Steven Taylor not yet fully fit following injury, they have put 21-year-old Isimat-Mirin, a France under-21 international, on their wanted list – joining Liverpool boss Brendan Rogers in tracking the £5million-rated defender, according to the Daily Star.
Newcastle have already boosted their back-line with the addition of another French international in Mathieu Debuchy. The 27-year-old right-back completed a drawn-out £5.5million move to St James’ Park last week having initially been tracked during the summer.
But Liverpool are also on the trail of Isimat-Mirin after making Sebastian Coates available for transfer. Brendan Rogers is looking to continue his rebuilding on the Anfield squad by adding the youngster to provide a challenge to Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger at the heart of the defence.
Should Newcastle miss out on the young Frenchman, they will turn their attentions to FC Twente defender Douglas despite Steve McClaren wanting to hold onto the Brazilian, who has also been courted by Reading.
