N’Diaye, a France under-21 international, has been earmarked as the man O’Neill wants to improve Sunderland’s physicality in midfield and he is due to complete a deal this week and make his Premier League debut at the weekend when West Ham visit the north-east, the Sunderland Echo report.
N’Diaye will become Sunderland’s first January transfer window signing and provides some much needed midfield options with captain Lee Cattermole sidelined until February with a knee injury, David Meyler offloaded to Hull City, Jack Colback and Craig Gardner required to fill in as full-back and wide-man Sebastian Larsson playing in the middle of the park.
N’Diaye can also play at the heart of defence, which gives O’Neill important cover with John O’Shea, Wes Brown and Carlos Cueller injured and Titus Bramble and Matt Kilgallon the only fit centre-backs available for Sunderland.
Sunderland are also hoping to loan former Everton midfielder Tim Cahill from MLS side the New York Red Bulls for a period during the off-season, and have been linked with a move for Anderlecht’s Hungarian international central defender Roland Juhasz.
