Emirates Stadium boss eyes up additions who could give his creative players more protection.
Arsene Wenger has been put on alert after Anderlecht midfielder Lucas Biglia made it clear he wants to move in January.
Arsenal boss Wenger has been watching the 26-year-old Argentine international and he is believed to be on their list of transfer targets.
Newcastle and Norwich have also looked at Biglia but Arsenal are keen to bring in a defensive midfielder and he could fit the bill.
Arsenal have also looked at West Ham’s Mohamed Diame and have scouted Wigan midfielder James McCarthy.
Wenger has admitted he is keen to make January signings to strengthen his squad.

Arsene Wenger could certainly do with an ‘enforcer’ style addition who could help give protection to his more creative talents and this selection of possible additions is a strong, and perhaps more importantly for the Gunners boss, a fairly cost effective one.
Anderlecht captain Lucas Biglia has long been an Arsenal target and a measure of his ability is the fact that the 26 year old has managed to forge an Argentine national team career despite plying his trade in a ‘lesser’ league, clearly the tough tackling midfielder will be all to aware that a high profile Premier League move will only help in this regard.
Wigan youngster James McCarthy is a player who has been around for some years having broken on to the scene as a 16 year old at Hamilton Academical and Roberto Martinez may struggle to keep hold of the Glasgow born Irish international much longer and Arsenal are just one of many sides taking an interest in the 22 year old, who has already racked up over 200 professional appearances.
Mohamed Diame may well be the cheapest option of the three owing to his reported £3.5m release clause and the West Ham man has been in excellent form this term, so much so that Sam Allardyce may well be expecting to lose the former Wigan Athletic man barely six months after picking up the Senegal international on a free transfer.
The need for a defensively minded midfielder is all the more obvious since Alex Song opted to push for a move to Barcelona and has been exacerbated by the all too customary injury lay-off.
Perhaps that lack of steel has played a part in the fact that a number of Wenger’s flair players have spent such lengthy periods on the sidelines. Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky all suffering in that department over the past couple of years.
