The Republic of Ireland’s first choice stopper has been forced to play second fiddle to the impressive Simon Mignolet this season, making his only appearances in the Capital One Cup, and has becoming a frustrated figure.
But Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill has told Westwood, who joined on a free transfer at the start of last season from Coventry City, that he must bide his time after turning down an enquiry for a loan deal from a club believed to be Steve Bruce’s Hull City, according to the Sunderland Echo.
Westwood was brought to Sunderland by Bruce before his sacking and O’Neill said: “Keiren clearly wants to play some games, of course he wants to play.
“My situation is that I have a very good goalkeeper in reserve, but it is hard to drop Simon Mignolet when he is playing so well.
“The fact is I’m very reluctant to let anyone go because we simply don’t have the back-up. A manager did ask me about Keiren a few days ago – rang me manager-to-manager, which seems to be very rare these days – and I just had to tell him we couldn’t do anything.”
Belgian international goalkeeper Mignolet has been watched by both Arsenal and Manchester United with both linked with potential summer swoops.
