Royals seek to boost attack with hopeful move for Old Trafford youngster.
Reading made an approach to sign Danny Welbeck on loan last night in an effort to enlist a striker who can score enough goals to keep them in the Barclays Premier League.
Welbeck has made seven league starts for Manchester United this season, but Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney stand in the way of him playing more regularly at Old Trafford.

Brian McDermott could certainly do with an attacking addition or two to help pull the Royals out of their relegation dogfight and a move to the Madejeski may well tempt Sir Alex Ferguson as it would give young striker Danny Welbeck some much needed first team football.
The 22 year old has made just seven Premier League starts thus far this season and the England man faces something of a struggle to retain a spot in Ferguson’s starting eleven given the excellent form shown by Robin Van Persie, Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney this season, the trio having netted a combined total of 40 goals during the current campaign.
Welbeck may have some reservations about a loan departure though as he could feel that such a move could be a step backwards in his progress to becoming a valuable member of the Man United squad.
Last term the adaptable forward played a much more pivotal role, starting 23 top tier matches and scoring a dozen goals in all competitions.
Reading have scored 23 goals in 21 Premier League matches this season and sit second from bottom some five points from safety.
The Berkshire side have managed just four goals in their last seven Premier League matches and this may well be what has hastened McDermott’s search for reinforcements.
