Forward to remain at The Hawthorns for the remainder of the season.
Young Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku is to spend the rest of the season on loan at West Brom after a deadline passed on Monday without him being recalled to Stamford Bridge.
As part of the loan agreement, Chelsea officials had to inform West Brom by Monday if they wanted to cut short his season-long loan spell. But that deadline passed without any notification and as a result the Belgian international striker will remain in the midlands for the rest of the season.
It had been expected that Chelsea would instigate the clause with Fernando Torres the club’s only striker for the first half of the season, particularly with 19-year-old Lukaku, who cost £13million rising to £18million when signed from Anderlecht in 2011, impressing at West Brom with seven goals in 21 appearances.
But the £7.5million signing of Demba Ba from Newcastle last week has meant Chelsea manager Rafael Benetiz is willing to allow Lukaku to complete the 12-month loan deal agreed in the summer.
“He will remain at the Hawthorns for the rest of the season,” a West Brom spokesman said. “Chelsea’s January option to recall him expired on Monday.”
