Lazio star to stay in Italy and turn down Anfield move.
Liverpool look likely to miss out on transfer target centre-back Modibo Diakite after Lazio offered the midfielder a new contract to stay with the club.
Diakite’s current deal was due to expire in the summer and Liverpool had been alerted to the availability of the playmaker with a free transfer move in the offing should they be able to beat off competition from Inter Milan and Juventus.
But Football Italia have revealed that Diakite, a French-born 25-year-old who is eligible to play for Senegal, is to be offered a bumper new contract to stay in Rome with Lazio despite injuries restricting him to just one appearance this season.
Diakite started out with Pescara before getting his chance at Lazio, who signed him in 2006 after just one professional game. At Lazio, he has endured a series of injuries but has won the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa.
Liverpool have targeted a new defensive addition in the January transfer window to challenge the first choice paring of Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger. Sebastian Coates has been made available for transfer and Jamie Carragher has yet to agree a new deal.
