Spanish top flight side Seville have announced the sacking of coach Michel following poor recent results and have moved swiftly to appoint Unai Emery as an immediate replacement.

“Unai Emery is FC Seville’s new coach until the end of the season and a season thereafter (his contract running to June 30, 2014) and replaces Michel, who was dismissed today for a poor series of results,” the club said on their website.

Michel, the 49-year-old former Real Madrid and Spain playmaker, only arrived 11 months ago but pays the price for the club being only in 12th place whereas they had hoped to be pushing for a place in Europe.

Emery, 41, had four years in charge of Valencia before taking the reins at Russia’s Spartak Moscow at the start of this season only to be fired in late November after a 5-1 home thrashing by Dynamo Moscow.

He will take charge of training from Tuesday, his new club said.
