Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has today confirmed his interest in forward Edinson Cavani, valued at £45m by this source, and is apparently readying a move for the Uruguayan international which will smash the club’s current club record transfer fee.
Wenger stated: “Cavani is a player that I like. Will he cost a lot of money? That’s for sure. Nobody would deny that.”
He added: “Our banker lives just next to me at the moment and he is ready if we find the right player.”
Earlier this month the Gunners boss has stated his intention to break a habit of a lifetime by spending bigger sums on players, due in part with the financial burden of the move to the Emirates Stadium lessening.
His intention is to keep his current squad and add “maybe, if possible, two new players”.
The former Palermo man has scored an astonishing 25 goals in 23 games in all competitions this season and that follows 33 goals in each of the last two seasons at the San Paolo.
Arsenal relied a great deal on summer signing Olivier Giroud at the start of the campaign but have opted to hand Walcott a striking role in recent weeks, with mixed results.
Cavani saw team-mate Ezequiel Lavezzi sold to PSG and may well feel that the time may be right for a new challenge.
Napoli sit in third spot in Serie A, five points behind leaders Juventus, chiefly due to the goals Cavani has provided, which have made him the top scorer in the Italian top tier.
