Stadium of Light boss Martin O’Neill is looking for defensive reinforcements with a mini injury crisis on his hands with John O’Shea, Carlos Cueller, Wes Brown and Danny Rose all spending time on the treatment table and has already added Kader Mangane on loan for the remainder of the season.

And he is preparing a £2million bid to capture 18-year-old right back Stones, who is also being tracked by Fulham who had a £1.5million bid rejected. Premier League rivals Wigan, Everton and Chelsea are also said to have watched the youngster in action at Oakwell.
Barnsley are understood to want £3million for their prized asset, but Sunderland could sweeten any deal by allowing Stones to remain on loan at the Championship club for the remainder of the season.
Fulham would want him straight away having sold full-back Stephen Kelly to Reading in the transfer window and told Norwegian Jon Arne Riise that he can leave the club this month after a breakdown in his relationship with manager Martin Jol.
