The Merseyside club are seemingly ready to match Turkish giants Galatasaray in terms of meeting Inter Milan’s €10m (£8.3m) asking price and now they must look to cover the 28 year old Dutch midfielder’s high wage demands.
Liverpool have held talks with the player’s representatives and will hope to use the money freed up by the departure of Nuri Sahin and Joe Cole to help cover Sneijder’s salary expectations, said to be in the region of £180k a week.
It would be quite a coup if Brendan Rodgers could land Sneijder this month and whilst doing so wouldn’t really adhere to the club’s youthful transfer policy is it clear that an exception would be made for such a talented individual.
The former Real Madrid and Ajax man has been frozen out of the Inter Milan first team for the past few months as the Italian giants look to offload a player who has become an increasingly isolated member of the Nerazzurri squad.
In his first season at the San Siro the Dutch midfielder helped Jose Mourinho’s side to a Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League treble but Inter Milan have then undergone something of a lean period since the Portuguese boss left for Real Madrid.
