Manchester United striker Federico Macheda is to join Spanish second division side Elche on loan for the remainder of the season, according to the Segunda Liga side.

Italian under-21 international forward Macheda is to be allowed to leave Old Trafford on loan for the remainder of the season after returning from a spell with Queens Park Rangers and finding his opportunities limited once again.

It was thought that the 21-year-old forward, who shot to prominence as a 17-year-old when scoring a late winner on his debut but who since has been farmed out to Sampdoria and this season to QPR on loan, had agreed to try his luck in the Bundesliga with Stuttgart.

But high-flying Segunda Liga side Elche have scuppered that deal it seems after claiming they have reached an agreement with Manchester United to loan Macheda, who is behind Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez in the pecking order at Old Trafford, until May as they look to turn an 11-point lead in the table into promotion to La Liga.

Elche president Jose Sepulchre told Efe: “The agreement between the three parties is complete, but we still cannot say that the player will come because nothing has been signed yet.”
