Sensational swoop for Pepe Reina on the  cards.

Barcelona and Manchester United are set to go head-to-head as they both chase Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina, according to reports in the British newspapers.

United are considering to swoop on their bitter rivals to capture the experienced Spanish international, according to the Daily Star. But the Daily Mirror report that they face strong competition from Barcelona, who will be looking for a new goalkeeper in the summer.

Victor Valdes, Barcelona’s number one since 2003, is set to be sold at the end of the season after announcing he will not be signing a new Nou Camp contract, which expires in 2014, and Liverpool and Manchester United are thought to interested in signing him.

Valdes could spark a merry-go-round with Reina wanted by Barcelona and Manchester United and the current Old Trafford number one David De Gea also in the frame for a return to Spain with Sir Alex Ferguson unsure he is a long-term solution to the club’s goalkeeping problem.

Da Gea has also been linked with being a successor to Valdes at Barcelona, as has Chelsea’s young Belgian international Thibaut Courtois, who is currently on loan at Atletico Madrid for the second successive season with his Stamford Bridge chances limited by the presence of Peter Cech.
