Arsenal are to step up their interest in signing £3.5million Brazilian midfielder Jorginho from Italian side Verona, according to the Metro Newspaper.

Scouts from the Emirates Stadium have been impressed with 21-year-old Jorginho’s performances in Serie B and Italian-based Tony Banfield has reportedly recommended that manager Arsene Wenger buys the winger, who has also been the subject of interest from AC Milan and Napoli.

Wenger has yet to make a breakthrough in the transfer market during the January window, but Jorginho could be heading to the Emirates Stadium if Arsenal meet the £3.5million release clause in the Brazilian’s contract which is only available to overseas clubs.

Jorginho would not need a work permit to sign for Arsenal as he grew up in Italy and possesses an Italian passport, making the transfer more feasible.

Wenger is also thought to be preparing to meet the £3.5million release clause in the contract of West Ham midfielder Mohamed Diame, who is also a transfer target for Tottenham, and could yet sign Barcelona striker David Villa on loan for the remainder of the season.
