Villa manager Paul Lambert has yet to make a breakthrough in the transfer market this month, but he has moved to sign 22-year-old defensive midfielder Sylla to help in the club’s battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
A former French under-21 international, Sylla was spotted by Lambert’s scouts playing in Ligue 2 – the equivalent of the Championship in France – playing at the heart of the midfield for Clermont Foot.
He arrived at Villa Park on Thursday morning and underwent a medical before agreeing personal terms, with transfer being for an undisclosed fee. It will not be completed when the paperwork is ratified by the Premier League.
Sylla will go into the Aston Villa squad for Saturday’s trip to Everton and he will be looking to make a major impact by helping to steer the club out of the relegation zone after a miserable run of form left them 19th in the table.
Having spent £23million in the summer, Sylla is Villa’s first signing of the January transfer window. Defender Alan Hutton has been the only player to leave the club having agreed a loan deal with La Liga side Real Mallorca.
