Everton are in talks with highly-rated teenage defender John Stones over a move to Goodison Park after having an offer accepted by Championship side Barnsley.

The £3million rated Stones is regarded as one of the best young defenders in the Championship and has been courted by a number of Premier League clubs including Everton, Wigan, Sunderland and Fulham.

Wigan are understood to have had an offer accepted for Stones on deadline day morning to move into pole position to sign the 18-year-old right-back, who is also comfortable playing at centre-back.

But Everton joined the race for the signature of the England under-19 international defender when having an offer of their own accepted – believed to be in the region of £3million – and are now in talks with Stones to complete a move to Merseyside. He is at Goodison Park undergoing a medical and discussing personal terms.

Everton have been keen to sign a full-back to provide cover with Seamus Coleman, who has made the right-back berth his own this season, currently sidelined with injury.

If terms are agreed, Stones will become Everton’s first signing of the transfer window following the collapse of Dutch international midfielder Leroy Fer’s £8.5million move from FC Twente due to problems with his medical.
