The St James’ Park added to an already busy January transfer window by confirming that 17-year-old Servette defender Mbabu has signed a three-and-a-half year contract after impressing manager Alan Pardew during a trial period.
A Swiss under-19 international, Mbabu has only appeared once in the Servette first-team and is unlikely feature in Newcastle’s Premier League squad this season with a spell in the academy on the cards.
“I’ve always wanted to sign for a club in the Premier League and Newcastle is one of the biggest there is,” Mbabu told Newcastle’s official website. “I want to finish my development here with the reserves before one day training with the first team and hopefully breaking into the first team.”
Mbabu is the sixth new face at St James’ Park this month and interestingly is another French speaker to add to an already Gallic dressing room with the other five newcomers all coming from Ligue 1.
Mathieu Debuchy joined from Lille, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa signed from Montpellier, Massadio Hairada arrived from Nancy, Moussa Sissoko was picked up from Toulouse and Yoan Gouffran was purchased from Bordeaux.
