De Gea’s future at United has been called into question with manager Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly not convinced that the young Spaniard is the long-term answer to his goalkeeper conundrum.
His latest mistake, which gifted Southampton the lead at Old Trafford on Wednesday in a game United eventually won 2-1, only heightened speculation over De Gea’s future and he has the rest of the season to prove he is the man for the number one jersey.
Manchester United are set to make a move for Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic in the summer, with Manchester City and Liverpool also interested. The likelihood of Serbian international Begovic being sold at the end of the season increased on deadline day when Stoke signed Jack Butland in a £5million deal with the young England stopper remaining with Birmingham City for the remainder of the campaign.
And, according to The Sun, De Gea will have to prove himself all over again over the next four months or risk being sold back to Spain where Barcelona have been linked with a swoop as they consider replacements for Victor Valdes ahead of a likely departure from the Nou Camp in the summer.
