Uruguayan international forward Cavani is expected to leave Serie A side Napoli at the end of the season after admitting he is ready for a new challenge and Manchester City are understood to be keen on signing him to replace Mario Balotelli, who was sold to AC Milan in the transfer window.
But manager Roberto Mancini has a fight on his hands to push through a deal in the summer after PSG entered the race for the 25-year-old’s signature, according to the Daily Star.
It is understood that PSG’s general manager Leonardo held initial talks with Cavani’s representatives during the January transfer window and will firm up the interest in the summer as they look to bring another big name to Paris having signed David Beckham in January.
Manchester City had been keen to do a deal on deadline day of the transfer window but were not willing to pay the £54million that activates a release clause in Cavani’s contract.
The Etihad Stadium club have been linked with summer moves for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, who is Cavani’s international team-mate, and Atletico Madrid’s Radamel Falcao.
