Tottenham are chasing a top-four Premier League finish, which would secure a berth in next year’s Champions League, and are currently on course to achieve it in Villas-Boas’ first season in charge of the club.
But the White Hart Lane boss has admitted that star man Bale could well want a move away from Tottenham if Spurs do not hold onto their top-four place.
“I think (qualifying will secure his future at Spurs),” Villas-Boas is quotes as saying in the pre-match press conference by Sportinglife. “This is where most of the clubs want to be, and where most of the players want to play,” said Villas-Boas, whose side currently sit fourth in the table.
“Gareth’s future is intimately related to what the objectives that we achieve for the season. Hopefully qualifying for the Champions League means we can attract better players and continue to hold on to our best players.
“It is difficult for other teams with the economic situation as it is to buy a player of this dimension. At the moment we are very, very fortunate to have him and I think we can reach our objectives with him at this level. If we reach our objectives we can hopefully continue to have Gareth in our club.”
Bale has been Tottenham’s lynchpin player for the past two or three seasons and that has not changed under Villas-Boas, with the 23-year-old having been used in both his wide role and more recently as a striker to help ease the club’s injury problems.
The Welsh international has been the subject of interest from a number of Europe’s leading clubs, including Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid where he is being considered as a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.
Real Madrid were understood to be ready to pay £33million to entice Bale to the Bernabeu in the January transfer window are may return with an offer in the summer with Ronaldo potentially on his way to Manchester United or Paris Saint-Germain.
