England full-back wanted at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are keen to sign full-back Leighton Baines from Everton as a long-term replacement for Patrice Evra at Old Trafford.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has long been an admirer of England international left-back Baines, who will come up against the Premier League leaders at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon when Everton visit.

And he is expected to make a move to sign 28-year-old Baines in the summer as he seeks to bring in a long-term replacement for Frenchman Evra, who at 31-year-old is approaching the latter stages of his career.

According to the Sunday Express, Baines could join close friend Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford but will cost Manchester United a significant sum to prise him away from Goodison Park – somewhere upwards of £12million.

Evra has had the left-back spot as his own at Manchester United since 2006 when he joined from Monaco, but he will have just 12 months left to run on his contract at the end of the current season and has yet to open discussions over a new deal.

Baines, who made his name at Wigan before joining Everton in 2007, meanwhile, has been linked with moves to Chelsea and Tottenham previously but that interest did not materialise into an offer for his services.
