Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has set his sights on in-form Sampdoria striker Mauro Icardi after a series of scouting missions whetted his appetite for the Argentine starlet.

The 19 year old has scored eight goals in 12 starts for his Genoa based side, this includes his current run of seven goals in six matches which included an impressive brace against Juventus and a four goal haul at home to Pescara.

Though Sampdoria paid Barcelona just £350k for Icardi in the summer it is believed his value has shot up to the region of £9m due to the instant impact he has had at the Genoa based club.

Having failed to make the grade at the Nou Camp the Catalan club are now apparently once again interested in the speedy striker and AC Milan and Juventus are also monitoring the forward so Arsenal are clearly not alone in their interest in the Rosario born marksman.

Though Wenger has a host of young talent coming through the ranks he doesn’t have a great many in a striking role to call upon to make the step up to the Arsenal first team and a move for Icardi may be the Gunners boss’s way of planning for the future.

He may feel that the addition of a new goal-scoring option up front is necessary but may feel that it is not necessary to splash out huge sums on an experienced option given that both Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud have been in relatively good form of late.

Icardi is a player with a great deal of potential and a player Wenger hopes will grow at the Emirates Stadium.
