Aston Villa are considering offering veteran defender Richard Dunne a new contract despite the centre-back not having played a single game this season.
fanatix tickets- Aston Villa vs Liverpool tickets are on sale from £30 for the match on March 31st at Villa Park.
The 33-year-old Dunne has missed all of Villa’s season of struggles through injuries having undergone three separate surgeries on a hip problem and the groin injury.
With Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert having preferred to go with a youthful side this season, it was expected that Dunne would be allowed to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season when his current contract expires.
But Lambert has revealed that could offer Republic of Ireland international defender Dunne a new contract to stay at Villa Park and begin the 2013/14 campaign in an Aston Villa shirt.
Lambert told Sportinglife: “It is not a case of running out of time. I know what the guy can do. It is not as if he is 19 or 20 years old and has to impress. I have an open mind but the main thing for me is that he is going to be fit again.
“We will have to wait and see what the surgeon has said about the injury. I am pretty sure that he will not require another operation.
“The advice that Richard has been given is that he will just have to battle through the problem. I will have a rough idea of what will happen after what the surgeon has been saying to Richard.
“The surgeon expected this to happen and the advice was to go back and see him again if it did. First and foremost the main thing is to get the guy back to fitness. That is the big thing for me. There is nothing in my mind other than getting that lad fit.”
Dunne has been with Aston Villa since 2009 having joined from Manchester City where he spent almost a decade of his career. Dunne had come through the ranks at Everton before moving to Manchester City.
