French international Gallas, who will return from injury in Thursday night’s Europa League clash with Lyon, has yet to sign a new Tottenham deal and looks destined to be allowed to leave for free at the end of the season.
The former Arsenal and Chelsea centre-back had start the season as a number one choice of Villas-Boas, but injury and the reintegration of Michael Dawson into the first-team picture has left Gallas’ future at the club hanging by a thread.
Villas-Boas has admitted that he want to reduce the number of centre-backs in his squad from five to four, which means that the out-of-contract Gallas – who will be 36 at the start of next season – is the one likely to sacrificed.
Dawson has been the regular face at the heart of the defence in recent months alongside either Jan Vertonghen or Steven Caulker, who have been used on a rotational basis. Younes Kaboul started the season ahead of all three but has been sidelined through a knee injury since August. He is not expected to return until the end of the month.
“We won’t start another season with five [central defenders],” Villas-Boas told the Guardian. “We have five top central defenders at the moment, a mixture of young players coming through with lots of experience, and then you have such tremendous central defenders as William, Dawson and Younes Kaboul.
“My squads in the past are built on four central defenders. We decided to go with five this season because of a setback to Younes Kaboul. William has been a massive player for us this season … he’s a player we trust a lot. Whatever we decide regarding his future, we’ll have to wait and see, but we are aware of what a presence he’s been for us this season.”
